Statistics released by HMRC shows that 1,773 online tax returns were filed Christmas Day, an increase of 13% on the previous year.

According to HMRC data logs, the most popular time for online returns on Christmas Day was between 12noon and 1pm where 148 returns were received.

Christmas Eve which is traditionally a busier day for filing saw 17,644 online returns and another 4,811 were received on Boxing Day.

All together 24,228 online returns were received over the three day festive period, which is up 5% on last year.

The deadline for sending 2014/2015 tax returns to HMRC and paying any remaining tax owed is Saturday 31st January 2015. All outstanding returns must now be submitted online as the deadline for paper-based returns has passed. Don’t forget though, to send an online tax return you must be registered for HMRC Online Services which involves the HMRC sending an activation code in the post which could take up to ten days to arrive.
