Festive Season Tax Returns Soar

HMRC reports record breaking online tax returns in time for the New Year. A 2.8% yearly rise was identified with 2,044 people shunning their Christmas dinner to submit their tax returns on Christmas Day, 5,402 sending off their returns on Boxing Day and 24,546 people submitting their self-assessment tax return on 31 December 2015.

The number of returns sent in over the festive season makes it the third year in a row of record-breaking numbers. Submissions over the public holidays are proving to be a continuation of increase citing a 13% rise in both 2014 and 2015. The rise looks set to continue with 11,000 people completing their tax returns on the first day of the New Year.

Personal Tax Partner Danny Clifford is not surprised by the rise in early submissions “The deadline soon catches up with people and having time off over the festive season allows people to get jobs like this ticked off their list”.

The deadline for submitting 2014/2015 tax returns to HMRC is 31 January 2016.
