People only have one month left to comment on the HM Revenue & Customs' (HMRC) consultation paper, Working with Tax Agents.
The document asks for a number of things, including greater disclosure by HMRC to professional bodies if there is evidence that members have been engaging in unprofessional conduct or they are deemed to be performing poorly from a technical standpoint.
It also requests a modernising of methods in trying to catch intentional illegal activity and for a system to be put in place that would see high volume agents who make large numbers of claims receive no merit.
Dave Hartnett, permanent secretary for tax for the group, stated that there was a need for focused powers that would enable the organisation to target those agents who discredit the profession.
He also wants to ensure that taxpayers get an acceptable level of service, and he views the consultation as an excellent way to achieve this.
It was recently announced by HMRC that a record number of people filled in their self-assessment forms online this year.
