The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) - the UK's leading debt charity - received 739 phone calls in January from self-employed business owners, which was a 78% increase from the previous month.
After the figures were released, the company expressed concern over people who run their own firm due to the unusually high number of calls made.
Laura Carver, CCCS helpline manager, stated that it had received thousands of phone calls over the last 12 months from individuals who have been struggling to manage their personal debt while trying to keep their enterprise afloat.
And she noted that the hike in the number of people getting in contact with them highlighted that debt was becoming a serious problem for the self-employed.
The organisation runs a free helpline that is open from 08:00 to 20:00 GMT, Monday to Friday.
Malcolm Hurlston, CCCS chairman, recently told people that the best thing they could do was to acknowledge the situation they are in and seek help.
