Record numbers of people fill in tax returns online

Three-quarters of self assessment tax returns were completed online this year, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has revealed.

In total, 6,429,899 forms were filled in on the internet before the 31 January deadline - an increase of 12% from the 2009 figure of 5,759,006.

Stephen Timms MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, stated the reason that more and more people were using the service was because it was quicker and easier.

He urged any people who were still dealing with the old paper format to make the switch as soon as possible so that they could enjoy the benefits associated with using a computer to fill in their returns.

The busiest single day was 27 February, when 384,638 people concluded the procedure on the internet.

An earlier announcement from the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) had noted their concerns over the restricted opening hours of HMRC's online helpdesk during the last weekend that forms could be filled and returned.
