Roughly double the amount of tax coding notices have had to be issued this year compared to last, due to an error with the new pay-as-you-earn system, it has been claimed.
As a result, the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) is calling on HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to introduce a drive that will inform and educate the large amount of people who could lose up to hundreds of pounds.
The president of the CIOT, Andrew Hubbard, is worried that many people will file away the information without looking at it.
Mr Hubbard feels the government should launch an urgent publicity campaign to highlight what has happened and what people can do about it.
And the organisation would like to see the government provide additional resources for HMRC to deal with the huge increase in enquiries that will result from the inaccuracy.
The announcement follows a statement released recently by the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group, making taxpayers aware of a change in how HMRC collects the money from them.
