Medical professionals urged to disclose income

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has called on medical professionals to disclose any understated income through a new tax health plan.

The body stated that those who choose to accept this must contact HMRC by 31 March 2010 to ensure they receive the best available terms when settling their affairs.

Director of risk and intelligence at the organisation, Mike Well, who launched the campaign, said people who come forward will benefit from only a 10% penalty on their assets.

Individuals who opt to ignore this opportunity could be subject to harsher fines, he added, as well as a full investigation.

The tax health plan is being introduced to ensure settling tax matters is as quick and easy as possible, Mr Well concluded.

According to HMRC, medical specialists could risk criminal prosecution if they have substantial undeclared tax liabilities.

A similar arrangement for people with offshore accounts ended on 4 January.
