HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has issued a leaflet to businesses in the UK to urge them to prepare for planned changes to the VAT system.
Modifications to the return filing and payment regulations are set to be brought in for 1 April 2010, with Britain's 1.9 million VAT-registered organisations being affected.
The new measures will require companies that have an annual turnover of £100,000 or more, excluding VAT, to file their returns online and pay their tax electronically.
Enterprises that sign up for VAT purposes after 1 April next year are also to be included in the new guidelines, regardless of their revenues.
HMRC's Stephen Banyard said that firms should benefit from the online system, as it is more secure, convenient and accurate.
Earlier this week, HMRC issued a reminder to all individuals filing a self-assessment tax return that they will need to submit their information by 31 January 2010.
