The government should not increase VAT in order to create extra revenue and deal with tax fraud, according to the Taxpayers' Alliance (TPA).
TPA research director Matthew Sinclair commented that his organisation is opposed to any such rise, because of the belief that the taxpayer is already giving more than enough, adding that cuts would in fact be more appropriate.
He said the government should take a closer look at reducing its spending in order to lessen the burden on those paying taxes, adding: "There have been massive increases in recent years way above the increase we've seen in the rest of the world, and that [means] there is a huge amount being wasted."
The European Commission recently said that EU member states including Britain need to work harder at combating VAT tax fraud.
Statistics published by the Commission showed that the UK VAT tax gap stands at £26,976 million, confirming the severity of the issue.
