Skilled IT workers flock to small firms

Meltdown in the financial sector has caused skilled IT professionals to hunt for opportunities with small businesses.

That's according to a new investigation by recruitment consultancy Computer People, which found that employees in the industry are now seeing the advantages of working for smaller firms.

According to the company, the IT industry is not "immune" to the recession, but it has seen a greater "unlocking" of talent.

Nick Dettmar, managing director of Computer People, stated: "High-flying professionals are now reconsidering careers with bigger firms and are instead considering the perceived security of [small businesses]."

He added that smaller enterprises often gave IT professionals the opportunity to "make their voice heard" and witness the benefits of their work firsthand.

An investigation by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development this month found that 76% of companies see apprenticeship schemes as a positive step in business.
