Employers have a legal duty to provide their employees with a ‘principle statement’ setting out their core employment terms – the statement should name the employer and employee, give the date when employment began, the rate of pay and the main conditions of employment. It also has to describe the job, state whether it is permanent or temporary, and indicate if there is a collective agreement regulating its terms. If an employer fails to provide this statement, the employee can go to the tribunals to obtain an order for such a statement.
